THE CREATIVITY OF YOUNG ADULTS DIAGNOSED WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA

Abstract : This study aims to assess the creativity level of eight institutionalized young adults diagnosed with schizophrenia. The creativity was measured in terms of fluency, originality and flexibility using the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) Verbal Form B developed by Paul Torrence. Findings revealed that the patient respondents’ creative potentials in terms of fluency and originality lay in a wide spectrum of weak (25 per cent in both facets), below average (25 per cent in both facets), strong (12.5 per cent in both facets) and very strong (37.5 per cent in fluency and 12.5 per cent in originality). Whereas, in flexibility the creativity level was within the spectrum of weak (25 per cent), below average (25 per cent), average (12.5 per cent) and above average (37.5 per cent). Hence, most of the patient respondents have very strong fluency and above-average flexibility.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL SUPPORT AND POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AMONG B40 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA SABAH

Abstract : Adolescents have historically been viewed as issues to be fixed and troublesome because to the idea of "storm and stress". These social perception towards this group has led the youth to be considered at youth to many moral issues, thus, the concept of Positive Youth Development was introduced to further investigate youth development in terms of Competence, Character, Caring, Confidence and Connection. This study aims to investigate the factors in Social Support (Family, Peer and Significant other) towards the Positive Youth Development. To measure this, this research is conducted using quantitative approach by survey method and collected 151 respondents from B40 undergraduates’ students in Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Respondents are collected by Convenience Sampling. The Instruments used are Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Positive Youth Development Inventory. The data was analysed using IBM SPSS version 28.0. Independent Sample T-test was conducted to analysed gender difference in subscale of PYD, One-way ANOVA was analysed to investigate between year of study and PYD, and lastly Pearson’s Correlation to investigate relationship between Social Support and PYD. Results shows there is no significant effect of gender and year of study towards PYD but, there is significant effect of social support towards PYD. This finding contributes awareness to the community to enhance family and friend to support as they are the most significant system in the Bronfenbrenner Ecological System Theory (1994) which states that these groups are the closest to the individual. This study provide insight on PYD and possible environmental factors. Further research may conduct this study using qualitative approach to gain in-depth information to understand student’s development better.

ADULT ATTACHMENT AND SOCIAL-DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTIC ASSOCIATED WITH SMARTPHONE ADDICTION IN INDONESIA

Abstract : Smartphones are basically electronic devices that can help human activities. The use of smartphones within reasonable limits can make a positive impact, but excessive use can lead to an addiction. This study aims to examined differences in adult attachment styles and characteristics of demographic groups on the level of smartphone addiction. The subjects are 602 adults over the age of 18 years, collected by accidental sampling method through the distribution of on-line questionnaires, using Smartphone Addiction Scale and Trend Relationship Scale (T-RSQ) questionnaires. The results of statistical tests using analysis of variance techniques showed that subjects with preoccupied adult attachment style had a significantly higher smartphone addiction than dismissing attachment style. Differences in smartphone addiction levels are also seen in different demographic characteristics. The female subject group aged 18-25 years, unmarried, high school educated and not yet working showed a higher average tendency of smartphone addiction than the male subject group, aged 26 years and over, married, having a bachelor's degree and working as a teacher.

Abstract : As stress, anxiety, and depression are on the rise among university students, it has become increasingly recognized as a public health crisis. This could hinder their achievement in university, relationships, and future career. Hence, this study investigates the relationship between repetitive negative thinking, life satisfaction and mental health among Malaysian university students. A web based cross-sectional study was conducted among 184 (female=129; male=55) Malaysian university students involved in the online cross-sectional study collected via Google Forms. Repetitive negative thing was measured using The Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire (PTQ). Mental health was ascertained using Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Meanwhile, Satisfaction of Life Scale (SWLS) was used to measure participants’ life satisfaction. The questionnaires used in the study and distributed via Google Form. The results suggest there is a relationship between psychological well-being (depression and anxiety) and subjective life satisfaction towards repetitive negative thinking. Therefore, it is critical to implement prevention and treatment programmers tailored to university students experiencing mental health issues.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENTING STYLES AND YOUNG ADOLESCENTS’ EMOTIONAL REGULATION IN PENINSULAR MALAYSIA

Abstract : Parents’ approach should be linear and compassionate, even though the challenge may change and pattern of thoughts undergo evolution throughout the development of child. The emotional regulation among today’s young adolescents is contingent on parenting styles practiced by parents. Diana Baumrind’s Parenting Styles Model (1966) were used to support the usage of Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) by Buri (1991), and Gross and John’s Emotional Regulation (2003) on describing two components of emotional regulation, which were cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression. A correlational quantitative design was used, where a total of 150 respondents, aged from 15 to 18 years old, living in Peninsular Malaysia, participated in the research, using snowball sampling method. Google Form was used to spread the survey and IBM SPSS Version 27 was used to analyze data obtained. The research found that authoritarian parenting style had greater effect to young adolescent’ emotional regulation. Result indicated that there was a correlation between authoritarian parenting style and young adolescent’s emotional regulation. The research proved that each parenting style affects emotional regulation and development in children, as it helps them prepare for situations when emotions arise, positive or bad. For future research, gender identity and age should be included to find and explore deeper, the relationship between parenting styles and emotional regulation.
